Music at Berrybrook

TEACHING MUSIC IN SCHOOL

At Berrybrook, we use Charanga Music School to support our teaching of music.  Lessons are taught through a complete suite of teaching resources whether catering for KS1 or KS2 children.  We use the scheme to support our curriculum and staff skilset in teaching music.  We believe that music is not just about ‘doing’ music, but should provide pupils with opportunities to make music, think musically and become more musical as a consequence.

Our music curriculum aims to build on three pillars of music; technical, expressive and constructive.  We believe that less is often more and aim to deliver three pilliars through Ukeleles, Recorders, Metaphones and pupils voices.  This allows the pupils to demonstrate progression in their knowledge and skills year on year.  Therefore, we aim for our children to get more proficient in music rather than just ‘doing’ music.  We work closely with Wolverhampton Music School to provide pupils with high quality instrumental teaching in a range of instruments.

Whole school definition

Music is vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.

Why study Music?

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. It can engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. To learn music, is to learn a whole new language.

WHY IS MUSIC IMPORTANT TO OUR CHILDREN?

Lily - Reception

I like singing new songs and playing instruments.

Ali - Year 2

I like the use of imagination of all the music we listen to and learn to sing.

Las & Arian - Year 5

Music helps us to be creative by playing instruments and singing. You can make your own music by using instruments and adding lyrics.

Zeva - Year 6

I like how sometimes when I play music I can get lost in the music and imagine I’m in my own world.
