Modern Foreign Languages at Berrybrook

TEACHING MFL IN SCHOOL

At Berrybrook, Modern Foreign Languages is focussed on learning Spanish through activities that support speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Through the use and support of Language Angels, pupils are exposed to native speakers in lessons to ensure accurate pronunciation and they have regular opportunities to engage with Spanish-speaking cultures too. Our curriculum focusses largely on day-to-day, practical language that pupils are likely to use when travelling or meeting Spanish speakers themselves. Throughout all lessons, fun, creativity and an emphasis to ‘give it a go’ are always encouraged!

By the time our children leave us, our aim for them is to be enthusiastic, curious linguists who have developed a knowledge of a Modern Foreign Language and an appreciation, and potentially even an aspiration, for cultures beyond their own.

The aims and objectives of learning a Modern Foreign Language in primary school are to:

  • foster an interest in learning other languages
  • introduce young children to another language in a way that is enjoyable and fun
  • stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language
  • encourage children to be aware that language has structure and that the structure differs from one language to another
  • help the children develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries
  • develop their speaking and listening skills
  • lay the foundations for future study
  • extend language teaching beyond mother tongue learning
